GSEA will be launching the Transcendence Near-Space Balloon at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, May 7th. Weather forecasts show clear skies throughout the day. Pictures and data will be posted as they become available.
On Saturday, GSEA tested the parachute and rope harness system for the Transendence
balloon. After securing the four parachute cords to the corners of the probe box,
which was weighed down with spare parts and batteries, GSEA members dropped the entire
assembly from the second floor to the basement. Watch the video below:
GSEA will have its first meeting of the 2016–2017 year on Wednesday, September 7 at 7 p.m. in Noyce 1022. Anyone is welcome to come learn more and join us—no experience necessary.
The National Science Foundation’s LIGO experiment today announced that it had observed gravitational waves, the result of two colliding black holes around a billion years ago.
GSEA is pleased to announce that the name of the near-space balloon project
will be Transcendence.
The name was selected in two stages. The public first submitted ideas for the
name. The team members then chose the top five names, which were put on a
final online ballot and voted on over a week.
More information about the project itself can be found on its mission
page.
GSEA has now opened up voting for the selection of the near-space balloon’s name. Anyone is welcome (and encouraged) to vote, but please vote only once. The result will be announced in two to three weeks.
